on sept. 27, news from the grassroots scheduled at 16:00, a special column of live news of the news channel of the cctv, puts on the news program with the title of “a day of the people running after wind in the sea”, which reports guodian longyuan’s typical technological innovation team and front line workers in rudong of jiangsu.
taking the first domestic intertidal demonstration wind power project – guodian longyuan rudong 150mw offshore (intertidal) demonstration wind farm - as the cut-in point and from the perspective of interviewing typical team and employees, the program fully shows the work style of the front line staff of china longyuan power that is to be diligent, work hard, be brave to keep forging ahead and make audacious innovations. meanwhile it demonstrates the explorations made by the company in leading the development and construction of offshore wind power as well as promoting the development of new energy industry. it also presents the achievements that have been made during the transformation of the development mode and the intensification of independent innovations of china’s electricity industry.

although the development of offshore wind power has a history of more than 20 years, yet there are still many technological limitations in which breakthrough is hard to make due to high cost. however, there is such a team in rudong of jiangsu that has made a series of impossible things a reality. within two years, it has built the offshore wind power project with low cost and high speed.

through our video camera, we want to record a day’s work of the people running after wind in the sea. to our surprise, they started to work at 3 o’clock in the early morning. we have to arrive there before high tide at night and the vehicle we tool is this tractor. on the beach of rudong, there are two tides and ebbs each day. during the two ebbs, however advanced a car is, it cannot run through such mudflat.

soon dusk is falling and tide will arrive. however, we have to wait for a long eight hours before we can shoot their work. this is zhang leping, the technological leader of this team. this team is the first one in china which has been engaged in offshore wind power operations and enjoyed good reputation in international peers.

the timetable of our work follows the moon because the tide, the crucial factor of our work, is influenced by the moon. tonight we start at three o’clock while tomorrow we might start at four o’clock. the timetable of every day varies continuously. as a result, our biological clock has been seriously influenced and some colleagues even haven’t returned to their homes for four months.

it is hard to use large construction equipment to build wind farms on such kind of beach. there are always tides and ebbs and sometimes there is water while sometimes not. this ship has been tailored for the operations on such kind of beach. during the tide, it can move around while during the ebb, it can park and launch constructions.
now we will move the ship to the place which is 7 kilometers away to install wind turbines. probably it is over there. it is not easy to move the construction ship with the size of a football field to that location and to control the error within 100 millimeter. the key is that we merely have two hours. after it the ebb starts and the ship cannot move around until next tide. if so a day might be wasted.
[subtitle] at five o’clock in the early morning, the construction ship moves to the exact place.

we think that they would start piling. however, they will make complicated preparations for piling for three additional hours.

throughout the year, we can only find the best construction time in summer and fall and there are only ten available days in a month. worse steel, there are only two hours that are available for real piling in a day. therefore, each minute is valuable. we have to closely link each chain. if several minutes were wasted, we would have to wait for next tide level which means we would have to wait for half a month before we can restart our work.

we get to understand the difficulty of running after wind in the sea. we realize that under this kind of special climate and geological conditions, each minute available for work is so valuable.
[subtitle] at eight o’clock in the morning, they finally start piling.

to pile the pillar of wind turbines into the seabed which is 50 meters long and weighs 600 tons, we can control the error within several millimeters. this technology is a zero breakthrough even in foreign countries. right beside our construction ship, there still stands the waste slanted pile that was piled half a year ago. chen qiang, duty person for the project construction, told us they had spent five months mere on the geological conditions below this pile.

the pile is seemingly very simple. however, below it there are several dozens of layers and each lay is very complicated.
[concurrent] zhang leping, longyuan offshore wind power company of china guodian corporation
at the beginning of piling, after each hit, adjustment shall be done and we have to study the change of soil layers. there are 40 to 50 times of adjustments throughout the whole piling and there are over 3800 hits in the process.
“what about the measurement result?”
0.65 per thousand(error).
everyone: wonderful, terrific, another pile, well done---

at ten o’clock in the morning, the tide starts to rise. everyone goes to have lunch and rest. we have to wait for another three hours to welcome the ebb time in which we will hoist and install wind turbines. it is the third highly difficult step. wind turbines have to be hoisted and installed when the wind speed is below 12 meters each second. if the wind speed is too high, accident might happen easily. however, in the sea nothing is easily predicted. the most terrible thing is that the wind speed varies continuously at random. while installing one wind turbine, they came across a terrible scene.
[concurrent] zhang gang, longyuan offshore wind power company of china guodian corporation
the wind speed is about 10 meters each second when they started to hoist the wind turbine. later it suddenly increased to 14 meters per second. everyone is extremely nervous.
[concurrently] chen qiang, longyuan offshore wind power company of china guodian corporation
then making full use of the split second of 14 seconds, when the wind speed decreased to 12 meters a second, we hoisted up the nacelle.
[concurrent] zhang leping, longyuan offshore wind power company of china guodian corporation
at that time, the nacelle weighed 137 tons. with bolts more than 100, it was hoisted to a height of 108 meters. only by installing each bolt to the correct position, can the whole nacelle be successfully installed. therefore, it is a challenging task.

in the sea, all required conditions permitting, it might take more than 3 days to hoist and install one set of wind turbines.
[subtitle] at four o’clock in the afternoon, a day’s work is over.

making best use of the ebb, we returned to the bank. watching sets of silvery wind turbines in the sea that are rotating slowly, i am deeply touched.

our team is the first one to try tomato in this project. although no one has done it successfully both at home and abroad, we has done it excellently. what we have done is the task nobody has ever done. proud, we feel proud of our team.
